Super Easy Creamy Alfredo Sauce

Alfredo sauce is a creamy white sauce that is often served on pasta.  It is made with heavy cream, butter, and parmesan cheese.  I love alfredo sauce not only because it tastes delicious but because it is a very versatile sauce that you can add any favorite seasonings and foods to make it more flavorful.  The sauce can be poured over pasta, asparagus, broccoli, or chicken dishes. It can be spread on pizza or used in lasagna instead of tomato sauce and used as a dipping sauce for breadsticks.

I’ve provided two types of recipes and directions for this delicious Creamy Alfredo Sauce with Spinach and Tomato. 

  • One recipe is a quick and easy way to make with a store-bought jar of Alfredo sauce.  I find the store-bought Alfredo sauce very bland, so I always add a few things to make it more flavorful and with more cheesy creamy richness. 

  • The other recipe is with homemade Alfredo sauce.  I’ve created and still love both of these recipes, and both are super delicious.

Recipe made with Alfredo Sauce from the Jar

Creamy Alfredo Sauce with Spinach and Tomato

 

Alfredo Sauce from the Jar - Ingredients:

  • 1 jar (15-16 oz) Alfredo Sauce

  • ½ jar of Milk (use the empty Alfredo sauce jar to measure and add milk)

  • 2 Tbsp Butter

  • 1 or 2 cloves Garlic – minced

  • 1 tsp fresh Parsley – finely chopped

  • ½ to 1 cup fresh grated Parmesan or Romano Cheese

  • -----------------------------------------------

  • 2 or 3 Tbsp Tomato sauce

  • -----------------------------------------------

  • 1 cup chopped frozen Spinach or 4 cups chopped fresh Spinach

  • ½ to ¾ cup diced fresh Tomato

  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil

  • 2 Tbsp minced Garlic

  • Pinch of Red Pepper flakes

  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Alfredo Sauce from the Jar - Directions:

  1. In skillet or pot, melt butter. Add the jar of Alfredo sauce and the milk. Cook and simmer on medium heat for about 5 minutes. 

  2. Add the garlic, parsley, salt, black pepper, and let it simmer on low for about 5 - 10 minutes. 

  3. Then add the grated cheese and stir until melted and it’s all incorporated in the sauce.  Stir in the tomato sauce.  Set aside.

  4. In another deep skillet or pot, add oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes.  Sauté 2 minutes. 

  5. Add frozen spinach and cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes.  If using fresh spinach, cook for 15 – 20 minutes until spinach is soft.

  6. Then add diced tomato and sauté for 5 minutes. 

  7. In the same skillet with the spinach and diced tomato, add the Alfredo sauce mixture on medium heat and stir to mix well.  Then simmer on low for 15 minutes, stirring often.

  8. Pour over fettuccini, ravioli, chicken, vegetable casserole or anything you’d like.

Creamy Alfredo Sauce with Spinach and Tomato

 

Homemade Alfredo Sauce - Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Heavy Whipping Cream

  • ½ cup Butter (1 stick of butter)

  • 1 Tbsp Flour

  • 2 cloves Garlic – minced

  • 1 tsp fresh Parsley – finely chopped

  • ½ tsp Salt

  • ¼ tsp Ground Black Pepper

  • 1 ½ cups fresh grated Parmesan or Romano Cheese

  • -----------------------------------------------

  • 2 or 3 Tbsp Tomato sauce

  • -----------------------------------------------

  • 1 cup chopped frozen Spinach or 4 cups chopped fresh Spinach

  • ½ to ¾ cup diced fresh Tomato

  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil

  • 2 Tbsp minced Garlic

  • Pinch of Red Pepper flakes

  • Salt and Pepper to taste

 

Homemade Alfredo Sauce - Directions:

  1. In skillet or pot, melt butter and stir in flour until incorporated.  Add the heavy cream. Cook and simmer on low for about 15 -20 minutes. 

  2. Stir the sauce often. Add the garlic, parsley, salt, pepper, and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. 

  3. Then add the grated cheese and stir until melted and it’s all incorporated in the sauce.  Stir in the tomato sauce.  Set aside.

  4. In another deep skillet or pot, add oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes.  Sauté 2 minutes. 

  5. Add frozen spinach and cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes.  If using fresh spinach, cook for 15 – 20 minutes until spinach is soft.

Additional Tips:

  • Use fresh grated Parmesan or Romano cheese (not the shaker grated cheese) for smooth creaminess. 

  • Reserve a few parsley sprigs and some bits of diced tomato to decorate and top your cooked pasta, vegetable, meat or whatever entrée you plan to serve with the Alfredo sauce.

  • You can add cooked meat to the sauce.  Diced cooked chicken, cooked shrimp, or little meatballs.

  • You can add additional vegetables to the sauce.  Cooked asparagus, cooked broccoli, artichokes, mushrooms.  Great for the vegetarian in your family.

  • You can spread the Alfredo sauce on a pizza in place of tomato sauce. Then add pizza toppings.  A great sauce for the vegetarian pizza.

  • You can use the Alfredo sauce to make a vegetable lasagna instead of tomato sauce.


Make Ahead the Alfredo sauce: 

Store cooled Alfredo sauce in a zip-lock bag or container with a lid in the refrigerator for 3 – 5 days. 

Alfredo sauce can be frozen too.  Freeze up to 2 months and let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

Reheat Alfredo Sauce:

It can be microwaved or reheated on the stovetop on low heat setting.  Add a little milk to help with the creamy consistency.

Cooked Spinach with Diced Tomato

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chopped frozen Spinach or 8 cups chopped fresh Spinach

  • 1 cup diced fresh Tomato

  • 4 Tbsp Olive Oil

  • 4 Tbsp minced Garlic

  • Pinch of Red Pepper flakes

  • 2 to 4 Tbsp grated Parmesan or Romano Cheese (to desired taste)

  • Salt and Pepper to taste

 

Directions:

  1. In skillet, add oil, garlic, and red pepper flakes.  Sauté 2 minutes. 

  2. Add frozen spinach and cook on medium heat for about 10 -15 minutes.  If using fresh spinach, cook for 20 – 30 minutes until spinach is soft.

  3. Then add diced tomato and sauté for 5 minutes.  

  4. Then add the grated cheese. Or you can wait and serve the spinach dish and then have the grated cheese sprinkled on top. 

  5. Serve and enjoy!
